Step 1: Prepare the Hanging Strands

Take the clear fishing line from your DIY wind chime kit and cut it into five pieces, each approximately 40–50 cm (about 16–20 inches) long. The extra length will be used later to tie each strand securely onto the wooden branch.

Next, prepare the five hanging strands in the following order:

  • 1 long strand: Thread 5 mother-of-pearl shells, placing 1 wooden bead between each shell (5 shells + 4 wooden beads).
  • 2 medium strands: Thread 4 mother-of-pearl shells, placing 1 wooden bead between each shell (4 shells + 3 wooden beads each).
  • 2 short strands: Thread 3 mother-of-pearl shells, placing 1 wooden bead between each shell (3 shells + 2 wooden beads each).

We'll show you exactly how to thread each strand in the next section. For now, simply prepare the five strands with the correct number of shells and beads.

Step 2: Thread the Mother-of-Pearl Shells

This is the easiest part of making your DIY wind chime. Once you understand the basic threading method, simply repeat it to complete all five hanging strands.

The key principle is simple: every mother-of-pearl shell is secured in place with knots, while every wooden bead is left free to slide between two shells. This allows the beads to move naturally when the wind blows, creating the soft, crisp sound that makes a shell wind chime so relaxing.

Start by threading the fishing line through one of the two holes in the first shell, then tie a secure double knot to fix its position.

Next, thread the line through a wooden bead without tying any knots.

Take the next shell and thread the fishing line through one of its holes. Tie another secure double knot above the hole to hold the shell in place. Then pass the line through the shell's second hole and tie another double knot after it. This secures the shell while keeping it hanging neatly on the strand.

Continue repeating this pattern:

  • Secure each shell with knots.
  • Simply thread each wooden bead without tying knots.

Repeat the same method until you've completed all five strands using the shell and bead quantities prepared in Step 1. Because the process is repeated throughout, this DIY shell wind chime project is very beginner-friendly and easy to follow.

Step 3: Assemble the DIY Wind Chime

Now it's time to assemble your DIY wind chime.

Take the natural wooden branch from your DIY kit and arrange the five finished strands in the following order:

Short → Medium → Long → Medium → Short

Starting from one side, tie each strand securely onto the wooden branch using a secure quadruple knot. Repeat for all five strands, making sure they are evenly spaced and aligned before tightening the knots completely.

Once all five strands are attached, gently adjust their positions so they hang naturally. Your DIY shell wind chime will now have its beautiful cascading shape, allowing the mother-of-pearl shells and wooden beads to move freely in the breeze.

💡 Tip: Tie each strand with a quadruple knot to prevent the fishing line from slipping over time.
